How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery

Your engine may be slow to start or you can hear clicking sounds as you turn on the ignition, amongst other things. If you need to disconnect and install a new battery, there is no need to worry. Steps on How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery

Having a dead battery can cause some issues when you’re driving around Oakland. Driving around and your battery dies can cause a major inconvenience in your day. By following these instructions you can get back to driving without worrying about your battery dying on you. Here are our step-by-step instructions:

How to Remove the Old Battery

• First, make sure that the car is in park and you have your parking brake engaged. The ignition should be completely off. 
• Next, find the car battery. It’s typically on either side of the engine compartment.
• Then, detach the (-) cable from the battery, and completely remove it. Make sure you keep it in a safe place. Important: Make sure the wrench doesn’t touch the negative and positive terminals at the same time.
• After you remove the negative cable, detach the positive (+) cable from the battery and remove that as well. 
• If your battery has a bracket surrounding it, you will have to remove that, and then remove the battery as well. 
• You can then recycle the battery by taking it to an authorized dump or bring it to a retailer for a refund. Definitely do not throw it in the garbage or dumpster!

How to Install a New Battery

• You will want to make sure there is not any rust on the positive or negative cables. If you find any rust, use a wire brush to clean it off. 
• Put the new battery into place and attach the brack into place if there was one initially.
• You will want to connect the positive (+) cable first.
• After connecting the positive (+) cable, then you will connect the negative (-) cable. Again, be very cautious to only connect them in this order — you want to prevent an accidental electric shock.
• You can test the new battery by turning the car on.
